The response of lipoproteins to dietary fat and cholesterol is higher in lean than in obese persons – a review

چکیده
Individuals differ in the response of their blood lipoproteins to cholesterol-lowering diets. One characteristic clearly associated with susceptibility to diet is leanness: many studies show that total, LDL and HDL cholesterol concentrations respond more strongly to dietary fat and cholesterol in lean than in obese subjects. This is unlikely to be due differences in dietary compliance. A metabolic explanation is that obese people have a higher rate of total body cholesterol synthesis. The LDL receptors in their liver cells are partly suppressed by this large stream of endogenous cholesterol coming in from their enterohepatic circulation, and the amount added by dietary cholesterol relative to the endogenous pool would be less than in lean people. Whatever the mechanism, diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol are less effective in the obese; the most effective way for them to normalize their blood lipids is to lose weight, which is, unfortunately, hard to achieve in our society.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most frequent endocrine disorders. Obesity and anovulation in the women affected by this syndrome leads to a type of obesity that is followed by cardiovascular disease, hypertention and cholesterol and lipoprotein improper profiles. Changing the life style, e.g. increasing physical activities is the first approach in controlling PCOS Ma...

Background: Adequate nutritional status is a critical determinant of the onset and maintenance of normal reproductive function. More than 50% of women with PCOS are obese and central obesity plays a central role in the pathogenesis of PCOS by generating an insulin- resistant state, It has been proposed that recurrent hypoglycaemia due to hyperinsulinaemia could lead to decreased post-prandial s...
متن کاملComparison of the effects of low calorie diet and lovastatin on serum lipoproteins, apob, homocysteine and total antioxidant capacity in hyperlipidemic obese persons
Abstract Background: obesity is directly related to dyslipidemia which contributes significantly to the risk of coronary heart disease, a major cardiovascular disease and a serious health problem. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of low calorie diet and those of lovastatin on serum lipoproteins, apo B, homocysteine, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in hyperlipidemi...

The objective of this study was to determining the relationship between the transtheoretical model constructs and dietary fat intake in obese or overweight middle-aged women living in Shaz...
متن کاملType of Fatty Acid Intake, Serum Lipid and Lipoprotein Levels in relation to Creatinine and GFR
Correlation between fatty acids intake, serum lipid and lipoproteins with serum creatinine and kidney function in patients with renal failure has been suggested by other investigators. This relationship has not been reported for all types of fatty acids. This study was conducted to determine the association of the consumption of different type of fatty acids, serum lipids and lipoproteins with ...
